If you’ve been researching extensively for the right treatment program, you’ve likely come across the term inpatient or residential treatment program. These programs are best for individuals who need a strict routine and high monitoring to ensure their safety and success in recovery. If this doesn’t sound like something that could benefit you, there are other options that you can explore. Those options typically include either partial hospitalization or an intensive outpatient program.
Partial hospitalization programs (PCPs) are a type of outpatient program designed to provide a higher level of care than a regular outpatient program may provide. If you go with this type of program, you will receive comprehensive treatment and medical monitoring throughout the day but will be able to return home in the evenings. With this program, you will typically attend the treatment center for about 4-6 hours each day, 3-5 days a week. Most of the time, PCPs offer clients medical services and management, individual and group therapy, aftercare planning and holistic treatment options such as yoga, meditation, fitness therapy and more.
Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) do not require medical services or direct supervision, but rather provide individuals with psychosocial support, relapse management facilitation and tools for coping mechanisms. As a 2015 study published in Psychiatric Services confirmed, IOPs have proven substantial reductions in both alcohol and drug use; the program may last 30, 60, or 90 days and typically involves the client attending the treatment center 2-4 hours each day for at least 3 days a week. Services are similar to that provided in an inpatient treatment program, without room and board. An outpatient program may not be a good fit for you if you require more monitoring than is provided in either an IOP or a PCP. However, it could be a great fit if you’ve already been in recovery for some time but need a “refresher” to boost or maintain your motivation.
Speak with a reputable treatment center today about which option could work best for you. Typically, PCPs and IOPs are more affordable than inpatient treatment programs since you will not have to pay for your room and meals for the duration of the program. What matters most is that you get the support you need, no matter your circumstance.
