The Recovery Movement: Advocating for Personal Empowerment

A 2016 study published in the journal Health Affairs brought about the term “Recovery Movement” – referring to the fact that those with mental illness and/or addiction can recover and become reintegrated into society. This concept takes into consideration many factors, including the increasingly more important act of self-care, greater self-determination, and a wider variety of recovery interventions than ever before. With the opioid epidemic, steps are being taken to ensure that more and more people are reached with educational material regarding their prescription medication; individuals are stepping forward in their communities to promote mental health and addiction recovery; treatment advancements are up front and center as policymakers and scientists alike attempt to uncover potential solutions to a variety of health problems.

  • By educating yourself and others on mental illnesses and addictions, you can reduce stigma associated with each; stigma has many damaging effects, including self-stigmatization, discrimination, and lack of help-seeking
  • By donating money towards a reputable organization, you can give places the funds they need to conduct research, design experiments, and develop latest technologies and interventions towards recovery success
  • By volunteering for reputable treatment centers and recovery organizations, your time, energy, and talents can be applied directly to areas that need it the most – helping people in the most direct way possible
  • By participating in recovery events, such as those hosted by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), you are promoting your own wellness and others’ – a win-win!
  • By seeking out a reputable treatment center for your own mental illness or addiction, you are showing others that it’s okay to ask for help
  • By hosting a professional intervention for a loved one, you are promoting your loved one’s health and well-being in the most respectful, loving way possible – by placing their needs as a top priority and giving them potential options for seeking help
