For more than 3 decades, Stephen King has astonished fans all over with his ability to write horror, supernatural fiction, suspense, science fiction, and fantasy. King’s first horror novel, Carrie, was an enormous success – it became a movie that sparked thriller fans all over the United States. Whether you’ve read Stephen King’s novels, such as It, The Shining, The Stand, Misery, The Midst, or Salem’s Lot, or you’ve seen movie adaptations of his novels like “It” and “Carrie”, it’s safe to say that Stephen King has certainly made a name for himself. Despite his successful career, however, King has encountered his own obstacles – one of those being alcoholism.
Stephen King has stated that while his story with alcoholism isn’t as gut-wrenching as his novels, his story is still one to tell. On The Guardian, he described a time in which he felt the weight of his problem by stating,
“The thing that I remember is being at one of my son’s Little League games with a can of beer in a paper bag, and the coach coming over to me and saying, ‘If that’s an alcoholic beverage, you’re going to have to leave’”.
According to “The Fix”, King has stated that he doesn’t remember writing entire 600-page novels due to his alcoholism. Stephen King had discovered drinking in his early twenties, and developed a pattern of drinking even into parenthood, which he admits sparked much violence and anger within him. Eventually, King dipped into other things, such as cigarettes and cocaine. It wasn’t until his wife, Tabitha King, staged an intervention by gathering all of his paraphernalia and dumped it in front of him and his friends and family. To much success, the intervention worked and King began his path towards sobriety.
