Sober Ways to Celebrate Valentine’s Day

As someone explained their story of recovery and sobriety on Vice Magazine, they also described their feelings of panic on Valentine’s Day like this:

“Every time Valentine’s Day approaches closer and closer, being single hits me with a sense of panic. Am I single by choice, or have I deluded myself into believe the farce that I am “focusing on myself”? I like to think that I could have a partner if I chose to have one, but it’s just not the right time for me.”

For many, Valentine’s Day is a way to celebrate love and romance with a significant other or to give a small gift to friends and family to show them your appreciation and love. For those in recovery, this day can seem daunting because of the pressure to be in a committed and happy relationship and the pressure to drink. People who do not have a “special someone” to celebrate their Valentine’s Day with may feel lonely or depressed, mainly because societal expectations make us feel like we should feel that way.

Despite the myths, Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be only with a significant other, and it doesn’t have to involve drinking, either. Here are some excellent ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day while sober and without pressure to find a date:

  1. Check out a museum. This is an excellent way to engage in something artistic while being in an environment that doesn’t involve alcohol. The best part – you can take as long as you want to explore the artifacts/artwork!
  2. Have fun in the snow. If it’s snowing in your area, you could take some time to look at the beautiful scenery and even play in the snow. Have friends over and go sledding or ice skating. Build a snowman and have fun.
  3. Have friends over and cook together. This could be a terrific way for you to connect with friends who may be single as well. In addition, setting the standard that no alcohol will be present and simply cooking will help you feel relaxed in knowing the pressure is off.
  4. Do something active. Bustle states that going to the gym, doing yoga, taking dancing lessons or taking a class can help you bond with others while having fun.

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be lonely, dreadful, or nerve-wracking. If you wish it, you can make it a day filled with friends, fun, and sobriety. Don’t let societal pressures cause you additional worry and stress. As the Daily News puts it, it’s just another day.
