As research on treatment has evolved, scientists have learned that the focus of treatment should be more integrative and comprehensive rather than exclusive. Not all treatment centers have adopted this latest finding into their organizational mission, however, which makes it more important to research before moving forward with a treatment center. By focusing solely on a person’s addiction and nothing else, previous cases have shown that a person does not receive optimal care, ultimately causing them to return for treatment later.
Integrative therapy is more client-centered, inclusive, and considers each client’s individual characteristics, preferences, needs, physical abilities, spiritual beliefs, motivation levels and history to tailor the program to best suit them. Different approaches may be used throughout a person’s time in a treatment program as their needs change. One way that many treatment programs are providing all-around care is through dual diagnosis treatment. With dual diagnosis, a healthcare team works with the client on one or more addictions and mental illnesses they are experiencing. However, because the concept is still relatively new, many treatment centers have not mastered this yet.
For example, a 2014 study published in Administration and Policy in Mental Health and Mental Health Services Research analyzed 256 programs across the United States and found that approximately 18% of addiction treatment and 9% of mental health programs met the criteria for dual diagnosis capable services. This is not to be discouraging, however, because it is becoming more widely known and as several years have passed, a system has become more strongly set in place.
Backed by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), effective treatment is said to address an individuals’ problems and needs, in addition to providing the person with tools to lead them towards success in their work, home, and social life as well. If you’re looking for a reputable treatment center, ensure that your needs get met by selecting one that provides an alumni program as well as continuing care to assist with job preparation, networking, resume workshops, outings, and more.
