Prescription medications are a hot topic right now, with approximately 1 in 3 Americans prescribed opioids, according to CBS News. Purdue Pharma, a privately held pharmaceutical company founded by physicians more than 60 years ago, is being sued by Washington state for aggressive marketing tactics of OxyContin, which they believe has greatly contributed to the opioid crisis. The lawsuit accused Purdue Pharma of downplaying the addictive properties of OxyContin and convincing both doctors and the public that risks were low, and that the drug was effective in treating chronic pain.
Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson states that the company has been earning billions of dollars while fueling the opioid epidemic. He noted, “I don’t know how executives at Purdue sleep at night.” Purdue has responded to these allegations by stating, “We vigorously deny these allegations and look forward to the opportunity to present our defense.” Washington isn’t the only state that’s suing medical companies, however.
The National Public Radio (NPR) claims that 41 states are banding together to investigate the makers and distributers of powerful prescription medications to seek justice for the many lives who have died from opiate overdoses or addictions. The coalition is seeking information from companies such as Endo International, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Teva Pharmaceuticals, Allergan, Amerisource Bergen, Cardinal Health, McKesson, and more. Government leaders are seeking to find out if deception was involved, and they are guessing that many companies are pressuring physicians into prescribing these medications without regard to the health of the patient.
As New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman stated on NPR,
“For millions of Americans, their personal battle with opioid addiction did not start in a back alley with a tourniquet and syringe. They got hooked on medicine they were prescribed for pain or that they found in their medicine cabinet.”
