Not Receiving Customized Treatment Could be Dangerous for Your Recovery

Approximately 21.5 million Americans experience substance use disorders and addiction each year, yet only a small portion of these individuals engage in a specialty treatment center. If you’ve made the decision to seek treatment, it’s important that you find a treatment center that can adequately address your needs; by receiving customized treatment, you increase your chances for success in recovery. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) has identified several principles of effective treatment, based on research conducted since the 1970’s:

  • No single treatment is right for everyone
  • Effective treatment addresses all the patient’s needs, not just their drug use
  • Treatment plans must be consistently reviewed and modified to fit the individual’s changing needs
  • Treatment should address potential mental disorders, often considered a dual-diagnosis

These are just a few key principles of effective treatment, but they all hint at one underlying message: each person is different and therefore, their treatment must be tailored to them. Treatment programs that claim to “cure” addictions or mental illnesses through a “one-size fits all” program is dangerous because they do not consider the fluctuations that occur as a person changes and grows over time.

A 2015 study published in the Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine confirms that obtaining information about a person, such as their biomarkers, individual characteristics, and short and long-term outcomes, informs clinicians of what changes should be made in treatment as to achieve the desired outcome. When you complete an intake assessment at a treatment center, the information you provide should be used to determine how the treatment program can work best for you.

The same is true for medicine – for example, while one person may be able to take penicillin, another may be allergic to it. This further denotes the importance of being as truthful as possible in your interviews and assessments, because that is what healthcare professionals rely on to provide you with the best care possible.

When obtaining information from a treatment center, take note of their concern for providing you with customized treatment. If this is one of their top priorities, you may feel a little more confident that you’re at the right place for reaching success in recovery.
