Whether you experience depression and anxiety or not, simple tasks such as making your bed in the morning can easily be overlooked if you’re rushing or don’t feel that you have the energy to do it. When the topic of happiness comes to play, most people discuss influencers such as environment, family, friends, work success, income, and more. What you may not consider is that making your bed in the morning could increase your happiness and overall well-being.
According to CNBC, socio-economist Randall Bell, Ph.D., has been studying high achieving people for over 25 years to find out what they all have in common. He and his team surveyed “more than 5,000 people across the world, including professionals, students, retirees, the unemployed and multi-millionaires.” They examined factors from writing thank you notes to eating dinner together as a family each night. One key factor that many had in common was making their bed every morning. According to Dr. Bell making your bed each morning puts your mind into a productive mindset, and can spark other productive tasks throughout the day.
Author Charles Duhigg writes about this in his New York best-selling book titled, “The Power of Habit”. He mentioned a study conducted by a researcher from Duke University in 2006 that found that more than 40% of the actions people perform each day aren’t actual well-informed decisions, but rather, habits. When habits pile on top of each other each day, they can have an enormous impact on our health, productivity, financial security, and happiness.
Something as simple as making your bed in the morning could trigger you to complete other tasks more efficiently, making your entire day much more productive and meaningful. As told on The Huffington Post, Navy Seal William H. McCraven stated during his commencement speech at the University of Texas,
“If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed. If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride, and it will encourage you to do another task, and another, and another. And by the end of the day that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed.”
If you’re looking to fill your life with more happiness and productivity, it seems that making your bed is the best thing to start with.
