The video footage on YouTube star Logan Paul’s channel sparked outrage and disgust from thousands of fans as the topic of how suicide should be discussed became prominent by people all over the world. The horrific video was recorded while Logan Paul was in Aokigahara – a wooded area in Japan that has been titled the “Japanese Suicide Forest” because so many have lost their lives to suicide there. Paul came upon a lifeless body and proceeded to film the recently deceased, mock them, then publish the video without consideration to th victim or their family. According to CNN, Logan apologized for the video by stating,
“I should have never posted the video. There are a lot of things I should have done differently but I didn’t and for that, from the bottom of my heart, I am sorry.”
Logan Paul’s video brings up an important topic of suicide awareness. The star stated that his original intention was to bring awareness to suicide, but that motivation backfired when thousands were traumatized from the horrific footage that was shot. What is suicide awareness supposed to consist of?
The Huffington Post has noted the following ways that constitute true suicide awareness:
- Sharing positive messages surrounding mental health on social media and in the news.
- Volunteering for a mental health organization, such as the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) or the Crisis Text Line.
- Speaking up when you’re concerned about someone’s mental health.
- Watching the language you use surrounding mental health and suicide.
- Educating yourself on the severity suicide has on the world.
- Talking openly and positively about mental health treatment.
Suicide discussions can focus on both awareness and prevention – in fact, they are supposed to go together. We can bring attention to the issue while giving people a new way of discussing it and doing something about it, which could reduce the number of lives taken and could increase the amount of support given.
