It’s Cool to be Spiritual
Being in recovery is about changing your life. In order to overcome addiction, you need to change the way you think and act. Many people will recommend spirituality for those in recovery, which can be a hard concept to understand when you’re in the depths of addiction. Most addicts and alcoholics feel betrayed by God. Many have turned against him altogether because they’re so angry. If attending a twelve step program, the principles state you should learn to accept and trust a higher power. If you’re struggling with the God concept, spirituality can be the answer.
Those in addiction and new to recovery sometimes see trust in a greater being as a weakness, and that exact behavior needs to change if you have any hope for long-term sobriety. Your self-will run riot has proven time again not to work for you, which is why you’re seeking sobriety. Something in your life needs to change, or nothing will change. Putting your faith into a higher power can lead to eternal peace.
It’s important to note there is a difference between religion and spirituality. If newcomers hear the word religion, they tend to go running. Religion is about community, shared values, and mutual support. Spirituality is about living life in a more open and free way. Someone who is spiritual will meet each moment with an open heart and have an overall gratitude for life. Spirituality and religion tend to be practiced simultaneously, which is why many people have a hard time distinguishing the differences.
Practicing spirituality is cool. A spiritual person radiates positivity and love for the people and world around them. Everybody likes being around a positive, upbeat person. Negativity is exhausting, and frankly, there’s no room for it in recovery. Addiction is an entire life of negativity, and you’re trying to break free from the bondage. Being spiritual can allow for miracles to happen. Miracles are ordinary events that we assign extraordinary significance. Receiving the gift of sobriety is a true miracle and making the decision to practice spirituality will allow your life to become what you have always dreamt it to be.
