As revolutionary, political leader and philanthropist Nelson Mandela once stated,
“It always seems impossible until it’s done.”
We all have doubts. Some of us worry about whether we’ll be able to get the job we want, others of us worry if we’ll be able to succeed in raising our children. These concerns occur because over time, humans have evolved to see the potential danger or risk in every situation – if we didn’t, there would be many deaths as we would go out into a treacherous area without considering the types of animals, or intruders, we may encounter. If you’re worried that it’s too late to recover, it’s because you’re scared and afraid of failing. This is a natural response to have, but the only time recovery is too late is if you’re no longer alive on this earth to work towards it.
A study published in the American Journal of Public Health sought to explore the effects of treatment and abstinence from drug addiction on a person’s mortality. Researchers from Chicago, Pennsylvania, and New York used data from a 9-year long study consisting of 1,326 adults entering substance abuse treatment in Chicago. Results from the study showed that older age, health problems, and substance use increased a person’s risk of mortality – but higher percentages of time abstinent and longer durations of continuous abstinence reduced a person’s risk for mortality. Do you know what this means for you? It means the sooner you seek help, the better.
If you tell yourself right now that it’s too late to seek treatment, you are only providing room for your addiction to worsen – which is the exact opposite of what you want. Many, many people have recovered from their addiction, despite the circumstances they’ve been in. You can review stories of people who have recovered straight from the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD); read through some of these stories here. There is hope for you, and it is still possible.
