Grown in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, kratom is a plant that has grown popularity in the United States for recreational use; it’s euphoric effects have been used by people to fight pain, anxiety, depression, and more. As stated by the Food and Drug Administration in 2017, kratom’s use has been highly concerning because it is an unapproved product that has been wrongfully used to treat serious health conditions. The increasing dangers that kratom causes should be recognized so that we can put a stop to this drug before it harms more people.
Forbes Magazine stated that kratom was found by researchers to contain plant alkaloid chemicals that were said to be opioids as predicted by unpublished computer models. If kratom is comprised of opioid-like chemicals, this means that users are an increased risk for abuse. A number of deaths have been recorded with kratom involved, yet many people are continuing to use the drug, believing that it is helping ease unwanted symptoms. The FDA’s commissioner, Scott Gottlieb, stated in the agency’s advisory,
“I understand that there’s a lot of interest in the possibility for kratom to be used as a potential therapy for a range of disorders. But the FDA has a science-based obligation that supersedes popular trends and relies on evidence”.
In light of the opioid epidemic, kratom is becoming an increased concern as officials are worried that the public will become abused just as much. Gottlieb noted that from 2010 to 2015, poison control calls regarding kratom rose from 26 to 263. These may seem like small numbers, but what’s important to note here is the fact that these numbers, if not caught early like we are now, can grow into thousands, which then can turn into an epidemic. If certain drugs are not approved, we must be extremely cautious in using them. Kratom has not been approved, and there have been no scientific studies to confirm any therapeutic benefits that are being reported by users.
