Essentially anyone can struggle with alcoholism, and celebrities are at a disadvantage when it comes to this because there are many open opportunities for them to drink. Being held accountable for exceptional looks and performances, many celebrities undergo so much pressure they rely on substances to help ease the tension. Thankfully, recovery and sobriety have become much more mainstream, and celebrities are opening up to talk about their stories. The following are celebrities who have worked hard to get where they are now:
Sia – The “Cheap Thrills” singer was diagnosed with bipolar disorder many years ago, which led her to become dependent on Xanax and OxyContin to help treat it. In 2010, the singer’s boyfriend had been killed in a car accident, taking Sia to a new ultimate low. She was writing a suicide note when her close friend called her and asked her to seek help. She told OK! Magazine, “There was a small voice [in me] that wanted me to live.” Now, Sia has been sober for over 6 years and truly embraces her recovery.
Brad Pitt – Fifty-four-year-old Brad Pitt has gone through family challenges, after the divorce with his wife, Angelina Jolie, after being together for more than 12 years. He described one aspect of his recovery to GQ Magazine as, “Sitting with those horrible feelings, and needing to understand them, and putting them into place”. Brad told The Rolling Stone that has been sober for over a year and a half now; he stated that it is a bittersweet feeling, but that he feels more balanced now.
Gucci Mane – One of hip-hop’s most admired artists, Gucci Mane has been arrested at least 10 times – mostly in 2010, for medley of assault, drug and gun charges, and more. He told the New York Times, “I felt like I couldn’t make music sober, I couldn’t enjoy my money sober…I associated everything with being high.” In 2014, Gucci Mane began changing his life around. He started working out and focusing on his health and recovery, which has now become a typical routine for him. He hopes that his recovery journal is influential on others.
